About Izibalo
Izibalo NPC was founded by Mrs Lynn Glover who has been assisting students with maths tuition in East London since 1995 and Mr Edumisa Mtoli who has been assisting learners with maths tuition since 2010 in Mthatha and East London. Together they have seen and assisted hundreds, if not thousands, of learners excel in the subject by adopting the individual tuition strategy where sessions are conducted based on the needs of the individual learner as opposed to those of the class and the curriculum.
The plight of the disadvantaged learner has especially become an area of great concern since the access to extra tuition is often financially out of reach for them. It was at that point that they decided to roll up their sleeves and build the solution by establishing a non-profit company. Since being incorporated in June 2022 and the first lesson conducted in August 2022, Izibalo has grown in structure, governance and improved the service given to beneficiaries.

Numeracy Box Programme
It has become evident that learners who enrol to our high school programme the Maths Pod in grade 8, lack basic numeracy skills. It is for this reason Izibalo has piloted a numeracy coaching project where the intake of learners is from grade 1 exposing learners to smaller groups of four giving learners the opportunity to learn numeracy in a fun way by using manipulatives. These learners are to be followed up on and absorbed into our high school tutoring programme in the future. This programme is delivered by trained coaches placed at nearby primary schools to the Maths Pod in clusters of 5 schools paired with a Maths Pod.
This programme is part of the coach-in-a-box npo collaboration where Thetha Nathi Counselling Services and Edusport Youth collaborate with Izibalo to bring holistic impact to the children of the communities we serve.

Izibalo was initiated in a space donated by the Gompo Library Friends of the library as their way of showing support and meeting their mandate of looking after the library and developing it. Siyakholwa Development Foundation pays a portion of the volunteer stipends through their social employment fund.
We also have a good working relationship with the Eastern Cape Department of Education through a memorandum of understanding that allows us to occupy space in identified schools in the Eastern Cape.
